Ronald McDonald teaches students about fitness
On Tuesday, May 8 Ronald McDonald of McDonald's fame spoke with our Pre-K through 3rd graders about fitness. Ronald demonstrated different exercies and dances for the students and emphasized the need for all children to be active for 60 minutes a day!
Verizon, State Representatives award grant to Visitation
On Friday, May 4 Frank Buzydlowski from Verizon, Representative Michael O’Brien (175th District) and Representative Angel Cruz (180th District) awarded Visitation School with a $10,000 grant through the Verizon READS program to purchase new books for our students. Representative O'Brien even took time out of his busy schedule to read to our Pre-K students. Their support is greatly appreciated.
Holocaust survivor speaks to students
On Thursday, March 29, Mr. Arnold Vanderhorst spoke to the 6th grade about his experiences growing up in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam during the Holocaust. As a Jewish person, Mr. Vanderhorst was persecuted for his beliefs and forced into hiding for years. The students were captivated and moved by his story. Mr. Vanderhorst stressed the lesson of perseverance and tolerance that is needed in our world, and that the students will be tasked with passing on the history and lessons of the Holocaust in the future. Visitation Celebrates Catholic Schools Week
January 29 through February 5 is the annual celebration of Catholic Schools Week. Here at Visitation students and teachers are celebrating Catholic schools with plenty of fun events. Some events are a door decorating contest, a faculty-student soccer game and a day where teachers will switch classes for a period to gain an appreciation for each other, and the different age groups in our school. It is also a time to thank those who dedicate their lives to Catholic schools so make sure to thank any administrators, faculty or staff you see this week!
Students Learn About Vocations
At Wednesday's School Mass Sr. Karen Owens, SSJ renewed her vows of chastity, poverty and obedience. We are blest to have 4 Priests and 9 Sisters serving the Visitation community, many of whom spoke to classes on Tuesday about religious life and their own vocation. Make sure to ask Visitation students about this experience and thank the Priests and Sisters who serve our community.
Blue Ribbon Commission Report Released
Visitation will be staying open. The Blue Ribbon Commission has recommended that Visitation and St. Malachy’s become a regionalized school based at Visitation starting in September 2012. Children's Scholarship Fund Application Now Available
On Friday, November 18 students from Visitation participated in the application kickoff event for Children's Scholarship at Citizen's Bank Park. Children's Scholarship fund provides 4-year scholarships for grade school students for private and parochial schools based on a lottery. This year they are giving out 2,000 new scholarships, which is more than twice what they have given before. The application is open now! Visit www.csfphiladelphia.org to apply!
Students From Visitation Place in Top 3 at Spelling Bee
On Thursday, October 27 students from Visitation participated in the 10th Annual Great Fishtown Spelling Bee at Shissler Recreation Center. Our students competed with students from all over the area in three age groups: Grades 2-4, Grades 5-6 and Grades 7-8. We had students place in the top three in each group! Jason Hua, a 3rd grader, and Jayson Cruz, an 8th grader, both placed 2nd, and Caroline Pena took the top prize in her group by spelling “remembrance” correctly! Congratulations to our winners and all who participated!
Visitation excelling at First in Math
Mr. Roache’s 5th grade class is currently in 3rd place in First in Math for the entire Archdiocese of Philadelphia! They also rank highly in Pennsylvania, and the nation. Mr. Roache’s students are working hard to keep that ranking, and hopefully move up. Visitation, as a school, has set a 1 million sticker goal for the school year and has already reached 200,000!
